Reading Options
There will be differentiated books and options for the anchor books based on difficulty level and material type for students to choose from each year. If students have a book that is related to a topic that is not listed, the student is allowed to run this book by Ms. Whitney in person or by email ([email protected]) for approval.
Discussion Groups
In the fall, there will be inquiry based discussions led by homeroom teachers about the summer reading books and themes. This discussion gives the GHS teachers and students the unique opportunity to build community through the discussions. The teachers and students will be provided with questions and media resources related to each anchor text.
English Class RAFT
The students will also complete a RAFT activity in their GHS English classes that relates to their summer reading anchor book and theme. RAFT assignments encourage students to uncover their own voices and formats for presenting their ideas about content information. The prompts will require the students to think about various perspectives:
- Role of the Writer: Who are you as the writer? A character? A plant?
- Audience: To whom are you writing? A senator? Yourself? To a character?
- Format: In what format are you writing? A diary entry? A newspaper? A love letter?
- Topic: What summer reading theme are you writing about?
